TLDR; PROJECT SUMMARY AI BETA
This project looks at how five important receptors in our bodies change shape. These receptors are involved in things like blood sugar, bone health, and hormone production. Understanding how they work can help scientists develop better medicines.
Note: This TLDR is a simplication and may not be 100% accurate.OFFICAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Class B G-Protein Coupled Receptors: Class B G-Protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are membrane proteins involved in the pathogenesis of diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, etc.
Here, we are trying to study the conformational dynamics of the Glucagon Receptor, Glucagon-like Peptide 1 receptor, PArathyroid Hormone Receptor, Pituitary Adenlyate Cyclase Receptor and Secretin Receptor - All Class B GPCRs.
These studies will help in designing better drugs that target these receptors.
RELATED TERMS GLOSSARY AI BETA
G-Protein Coupled Receptors
Cell surface receptors that activate intracellular signaling cascades via G proteins.
G-Protein Coupled Receptors (GPCRs) are a large family of membrane proteins found on the surface of cells. They act as receptors, binding to specific molecules like hormones or neurotransmitters. This binding triggers a cascade of events inside the cell, ultimately leading to various cellular responses. GPCRs play crucial roles in many physiological processes, including vision, smell, taste, and hormone regulation. Many drugs target GPCRs, making them important targets for treating diseases.
Class B G-Protein Coupled Receptors
A subfamily of GPCRs characterized by a distinct binding domain and signaling pathways.
Class B G-Protein Coupled Receptors are a specific group within the larger family of GPCRs. They share common structural features and often bind to peptide hormones. These receptors play roles in various physiological processes, including regulating metabolism, growth, and development. Research on Class B GPCRs is crucial for understanding and developing new therapies for diseases like diabetes and osteoporosis.
Glucagon Receptor
A receptor on cells that binds to glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar levels.
The Glucagon Receptor is a protein found on the surface of liver and other cells. It responds to the hormone glucagon, which helps regulate blood sugar levels. When glucagon binds to the receptor, it triggers a series of events within the cell that ultimately lead to the release of glucose into the bloodstream. This process is essential for maintaining stable blood sugar levels.
Glucagon-like Peptide 1 receptor
A receptor that binds to glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), a hormone involved in regulating blood sugar levels.
The Glucagon-like Peptide 1 Receptor is another important player in blood sugar regulation. It responds to GLP-1, a hormone released from the gut after meals. When GLP-1 binds to its receptor, it stimulates insulin release and slows down gastric emptying, effectively lowering blood sugar levels. GLP-1 receptors are being investigated as therapeutic targets for treating type 2 diabetes.
PArathyroid Hormone Receptor
A receptor that binds to parathyroid hormone (PTH), a hormone involved in regulating calcium levels in the body.
The Parathyroid Hormone Receptor is crucial for maintaining proper calcium balance in the body. When parathyroid hormone (PTH) binds to its receptor, it stimulates bone breakdown and calcium reabsorption in the kidneys, ultimately increasing blood calcium levels. This process is essential for various bodily functions, including muscle contraction, nerve signaling, and blood clotting.
Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase Receptor
A receptor activated by hormones like thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) that stimulates adenylate cyclase.
The Pituitary Adenylate Cyclase Receptor is a type of G protein-coupled receptor found in the pituitary gland. It plays a vital role in regulating various endocrine functions by responding to hormones like TRH, which stimulate the production of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH then acts on the thyroid gland to control the production of thyroid hormones.
Secretin Receptor
A receptor that binds to secretin, a hormone involved in regulating pancreatic secretions.
The Secretin Receptor is found on the surface of pancreatic cells. It responds to the hormone secretin, which is released from the duodenum (the first part of the small intestine) after meals. When secretin binds to its receptor, it triggers the release of bicarbonate-rich fluids from the pancreas, helping neutralize stomach acid and create an optimal environment for digestion.
