TLDR; PROJECT SUMMARY AI BETA

Class A GPCRs are important proteins that control many body functions. They act like cellular 'telephones,' sending signals within the body. This project explores how they work to develop new drugs for diseases like cancer, diabetes, and mental health.

Note: This TLDR is a simplication and may not be 100% accurate.

OFFICAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Class A GPCRs: Class A GPCRs are pivotal drug targets in our body, as they are involved in regulating almost all homeostatic processes in the human body.

It is estimated that around 35% of all drugs currently approved by the FDA target one of these GPCRs.

These proteins act like 'molecular telephones' and transmit signals from outside the cell to inside the cell.

Here, we aim to study the process that underlies their action on our body.

This is integral for providing insights into the protein's function and design better and new drugs targeting cancer, diabetes, depression and anxiety.

RELATED TERMS GLOSSARY AI BETA

GPCRs

G protein-coupled receptors

Scientific: Biotechnology
Pharmacology / Drug Targets

GPCRs are a large family of cell surface receptors that play a crucial role in transmitting signals from the outside to the inside of cells. They are involved in a wide range of physiological processes and are important targets for many drugs.

FDA

Food and Drug Administration

Acronym: Healthcare
Medicine / Drug Regulation

The FDA is a federal agency responsible for protecting public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation's food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation.

Drug Targets

Molecules or biological pathways that are specifically targeted by drugs to produce a therapeutic effect.

Scientific: Biotechnology
Pharmacology / Drug Discovery

Drug targets are essential components of drug development. Identifying and understanding these targets allows researchers to design medications that effectively interact with specific proteins or cellular processes involved in disease.

Cancer

A group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body.

Medical Condition: Healthcare
Pathology / Oncology

Cancer is a complex group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled cell growth and division. These abnormal cells can form tumors that can damage surrounding tissues and organs.

Diabetes

A metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels due to problems with insulin production or function.

Medical Condition: Healthcare
Pathology / Endocrinology

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects how the body regulates blood sugar. There are two main types: type 1, where the immune system attacks insulin-producing cells, and type 2, where the body becomes resistant to insulin.

Depression

A mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in activities.

Mental Health Disorder: Healthcare
Psychiatry / Mood Disorders

Depression is a common mental health condition that can significantly affect a person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Symptoms include persistent sadness, fatigue, changes in appetite and sleep, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness.

Anxiety

A feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.

Mental Health Disorder: Healthcare
Psychiatry / Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety is a natural human emotion that can be helpful in certain situations. However, when it becomes excessive or persistent, it can develop into an anxiety disorder, which can significantly impact daily life.
