Class A GPCRs are like tiny 'molecular telephones' that control many bodily functions. This project studies how these proteins work to understand diseases like cancer, diabetes, and mental health problems, so we can develop better treatments.

Class A GPCRs: Class A GPCRs are pivotal drug targets in our body, as they are involved in regulating almost all homeostatic processes in the human body.

It is estimated that around 35% of all drugs currently approved by the FDA target one of these GPCRs.

These proteins act like 'molecular telephones' and transmit signals from outside the cell to inside the cell.

Here, we aim to study the process that underlies their action on our body.

This is integral for providing insights into the protein's function and design better and new drugs targeting cancer, diabetes, depression and anxiety.

G Protein-Coupled Receptors

GPCRs are a large family of cell surface receptors that play crucial roles in various physiological processes. They receive signals from outside the cell and transmit them to the inside, triggering cellular responses. Many drugs target GPCRs for therapeutic purposes.

FDA

Food and Drug Administration

The FDA is a government agency responsible for protecting public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation's food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation.

Diabetes

A metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels.

Diabetes occurs when the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or can't effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Without enough insulin, glucose builds up in the bloodstream, leading to various complications like heart disease, vision problems, and nerve damage.

Cancer

A group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body.

Cancer arises from mutations in genes that control cell growth and division. These mutations can be inherited or acquired through environmental factors like smoking or exposure to radiation. Cancer cells lose their normal regulatory mechanisms and multiply uncontrollably, forming tumors.

Depression

A mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest.

Depression is a complex mental health condition that affects thoughts, feelings, behavior, and physical well-being. Symptoms include persistent sadness, fatigue, changes in appetite or sleep patterns, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness or guilt.

Anxiety

A state of excessive worry or fear, often accompanied by physical symptoms.

Anxiety is a common mental health condition characterized by excessive worry, nervousness, and apprehension. Symptoms can include rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, dizziness, and difficulty concentrating.
