TLDR; PROJECT SUMMARY AI BETA

Class A GPCRs are like cell 'telephones' that control most body functions. This project studies how they work to design new drugs for diseases like cancer, diabetes, and depression.

Note: This TLDR is a simplication and may not be 100% accurate.

OFFICAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Class A GPCRs: Class A GPCRs are pivotal drug targets in our body, as they are involved in regulating almost all homeostatic processes in the human body.

It is estimated that around 35% of all drugs currently approved by the FDA target one of these GPCRs.

These proteins act like 'molecular telephones' and transmit signals from outside the cell to inside the cell.

Here, we aim to study the process that underlies their action on our body.

This is integral for providing insights into the protein's function and design better and new drugs targeting cancer, diabetes, depression and anxiety.

GPCRs

G protein-coupled receptors

Scientific: Biotechnology
Pharmacology / Drug Targets

GPCRs are a large family of cell surface receptors that play a crucial role in transmitting signals from outside the cell to inside the cell. They are involved in a wide range of physiological processes, making them important drug targets for various diseases.

Drug Targets

Molecules or biological pathways that are intended to be inhibited or activated by drugs.

Technical: Biotechnology
Pharmacology / Drug Discovery

Drug targets are specific molecules or cellular processes that drugs aim to interact with in order to produce a therapeutic effect. Identifying and understanding drug targets is essential for the development of new medications.

FDA

Food and Drug Administration

Acronym: Pharmaceuticals
Regulatory / Drug Approval

The FDA is a federal agency responsible for ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, our nation's food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation.

Cancer

A group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body.

Medical Condition: Healthcare
Pathology / Oncology

Cancer is a broad term encompassing various diseases characterized by uncontrolled cell proliferation. These cells can invade surrounding tissues and metastasize to distant organs, leading to potentially life-threatening complications.

Diabetes

A chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels due to defects in insulin production or action.

Medical Condition: Healthcare
Endocrinology / Metabolic Disorders

Diabetes is a long-term condition where the body either doesn't produce enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels. Without proper insulin function, glucose builds up in the bloodstream, leading to various health complications.

Depression

A common mental illness characterized by persistent sadness, loss of interest, and other emotional and cognitive symptoms.

Mental Health Disorder: Healthcare
Psychiatry / Mood Disorders

Depression is a serious mental health condition that involves prolonged feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and lack of motivation. It can affect various aspects of life, including relationships, work, and overall well-being.

Anxiety

A group of mental health disorders characterized by excessive worry, fear, and apprehension.

Mental Health Disorder: Healthcare
Psychiatry / Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety is a common human experience but can become a disorder when it is excessive, persistent, and interferes with daily life. Anxiety disorders involve intense feelings of fear, worry, and unease that are often disproportionate to the situation.
