TLDR; PROJECT SUMMARY AI BETA
This project looks at myosins, proteins that power our muscles and cells. Scientists want to understand how drugs could fix problems with myosins, like those causing heart conditions. Myosin was even featured as a special protein by scientists!
Note: This TLDR is a simplication and may not be 100% accurate.OFFICAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project simulates several myosins found in the human body.
Myosins are the proteins responsible for most of the force generated by the body, from the contraction of muscles to the movement of materials around the cell.
We are interested in understanding the mechanistic basis of drugs that might be used to treat defects in myosin, including hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathies as well as heart failure.
Myosin was featured as the PDB Molecule of the Month in June 2001.
RELATED TERMS GLOSSARY AI BETA
myosins
Proteins responsible for force generation in cells.
Myosins are a family of motor proteins essential for various cellular functions. They convert chemical energy into mechanical work, driving processes like muscle contraction, intracellular transport, and cell division. Defects in myosin function can lead to diseases such as cardiomyopathies and heart failure.
proteins
Large biomolecules essential for all living organisms.
Proteins are the workhorses of cells, performing a vast array of functions. They act as enzymes, structural components, transporters, and signaling molecules. Their diverse structures and properties allow them to carry out the complex processes that sustain life.
cardiomyopathies
Diseases affecting the heart muscle.
Cardiomyopathies encompass a group of disorders that weaken or stiffen the heart muscle, impairing its ability to pump blood effectively. Symptoms can range from fatigue and shortness of breath to heart failure. Causes include genetic predisposition, infections, and lifestyle factors.
heart failure
A condition where the heart cannot pump blood effectively.
Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle weakens or becomes stiff, making it difficult for the heart to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. This can lead to fluid buildup in the lungs and other parts of the body, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling.
PDB
Protein Data Bank
The Protein Data Bank (PDB) is a global repository of 3D structural data for biological macromolecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids. Researchers use this database to understand the structure and function of these molecules, which is essential for drug discovery and other applications.
Molecule of the Month
A monthly feature highlighting a significant protein structure from the PDB.
The 'Molecule of the Month' is a popular educational program that features a different protein structure from the PDB each month. It aims to raise awareness about the importance of structural biology and its applications in various fields.
