TLDR; PROJECT SUMMARY AI BETA
This project studies myosin proteins, which power muscle movement and many cellular processes. Scientists want to understand how drugs could fix problems with myosin that cause heart diseases like cardiomyopathies and heart failure.
Note: This TLDR is a simplication and may not be 100% accurate.OFFICAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project simulates several myosins found in the human body.
Myosins are the proteins responsible for most of the force generated by the body, from the contraction of muscles to the movement of materials around the cell.
We are interested in understanding the mechanistic basis of drugs that might be used to treat defects in myosin, including hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathies as well as heart failure.
Myosin was featured as the PDB Molecule of the Month in June 2001.
RELATED TERMS GLOSSARY AI BETA
myosins
Proteins responsible for force generation in the body.
Myosins are a group of proteins crucial for movement within cells and throughout the body. They power muscle contractions, enable cellular transport, and play a role in various biological processes. Defects in myosin function can lead to diseases like cardiomyopathies and heart failure.
proteins
Large biomolecules essential for all life processes.
Proteins are the workhorses of cells, carrying out a vast array of functions. They build and repair tissues, catalyze chemical reactions, transport molecules, and provide structural support. Proteins are made up of chains of amino acids, folded into complex 3D shapes that determine their function.
cardiomyopathies
Diseases of the heart muscle.
Cardiomyopathies are a group of conditions that affect the heart muscle's ability to pump blood effectively. They can be caused by genetic factors, infections, or other diseases. Symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, and chest pain.
heart failure
A serious condition where the heart cannot pump blood effectively.
Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle weakens and can't pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. This can lead to fluid buildup in the lungs and other parts of the body, causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling.
PDB
Protein Data Bank
The Protein Data Bank (PDB) is a global repository of 3D structural data for biological macromolecules, including proteins and nucleic acids. Researchers use this information to understand how these molecules function and develop new drugs and therapies.
