TLDR; PROJECT SUMMARY AI BETA
This project studies myosins, proteins that power muscle movement and cell functions. Researchers aim to understand how drugs can fix problems with myosin, like those causing heart conditions. Myosin is so important it was even featured as a special molecule by scientists!
Note: This TLDR is a simplication and may not be 100% accurate.OFFICAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project simulates several myosins found in the human body.
Myosins are the proteins responsible for most of the force generated by the body, from the contraction of muscles to the movement of materials around the cell.
We are interested in understanding the mechanistic basis of drugs that might be used to treat defects in myosin, including hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathies as well as heart failure.
Myosin was featured as the PDB Molecule of the Month in June 2001.
RELATED TERMS GLOSSARY AI BETA
Myosins
Proteins responsible for muscle contraction and cellular movement.
Myosins are essential proteins found in the human body. They generate force and power various functions, including muscle contraction, organelle transport within cells, and even blood flow. Defects in myosin can lead to serious health conditions like cardiomyopathies (heart diseases) and muscular dystrophies.
Proteins
Large, complex molecules essential for life.
Proteins are the workhorses of the body, performing a vast array of functions. They act as enzymes (catalyzing reactions), structural components (giving shape and support), hormones (regulating processes), antibodies (fighting infection), and transporters (moving molecules). Their diverse roles make them crucial for life.
Cardiomyopathies
Diseases of the heart muscle.
Cardiomyopathies are a group of conditions affecting the heart muscle. They can weaken the heart, making it struggle to pump blood effectively. This can lead to symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, and swelling in the legs. Treatment often involves medications, lifestyle changes, and in some cases, surgery.
Heart Failure
A serious condition where the heart can't pump blood effectively.
Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle weakens and becomes unable to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs. This can lead to a buildup of fluid in the lungs and other parts of the body, causing shortness of breath, fatigue, and swelling. Treatment often involves medications, lifestyle changes, and sometimes surgery.
PDB
Protein Data Bank
The Protein Data Bank (PDB) is a global repository of 3D structural data for biological macromolecules like proteins and nucleic acids. This invaluable resource allows scientists to visualize and analyze the intricate structures of these molecules, contributing to our understanding of their functions and potential therapeutic targets.
