TLDR; PROJECT SUMMARY AI BETA

Corisin is a peptide found in the lungs that can cause cell death. It's also been found in people with lung and kidney problems. This project uses computer simulations to see how corisin peptides clump together, which might explain how it harms organs.

Note: This TLDR is a simplication and may not be 100% accurate.

OFFICAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The corisin peptide was originally isolated from the lung and determined to induce apoptosis of lung alveolar epithelial cells.

The peptide was later found to be present in the serum of lung fibrosis patients and thus suggesting potential impact on distant organs.

With subsequent research demonstrating induction of apoptosis in both podocytes and renal tubular cells, we sought to investigate the potential role of corisin and its related peptides in kidney dysfunction.

In this study, we would like to use molecular dynamics simulation to explore the aggregation of multiple corisin peptides.

RELATED TERMS GLOSSARY AI BETA

Note: Glossary items are a high level summary and may not be 100% accurate.

corisin

A peptide originally isolated from the lung.

Scientific: Pharmaceutical
Biotechnology / Peptide Research

Corisin is a peptide that was first discovered in the lungs. It can trigger cell death (apoptosis) in lung cells and has been found in the blood of people with lung fibrosis. Further research suggests it may also affect kidney cells, leading to interest in its potential role in kidney problems.

lung

The respiratory organ responsible for gas exchange.

Anatomical: Healthcare
Biomedical Sciences / Pulmonology

The lungs are the organs in your chest that allow you to breathe. They take in oxygen from the air and release carbon dioxide.

apoptosis

Programmed cell death.

Scientific: Pharmaceutical
Biotechnology / Cellular Biology

Apoptosis is a natural process where cells self-destruct in an orderly way. It's important for removing damaged or unwanted cells from the body.

alveolar epithelial cells

Cells lining the air sacs in the lungs.

Scientific: Pharmaceutical
Biotechnology / Pulmonology

Alveolar epithelial cells are the cells that form the thin walls of the air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs. They are responsible for gas exchange between your blood and the air you breathe.

lung fibrosis

Scarring and hardening of lung tissue.

Medical: Healthcare
Biomedical Sciences / Pulmonology

Lung fibrosis is a condition where the lungs become stiff and scarred. This makes it difficult to breathe and can be caused by various factors such as smoking, environmental exposures, and autoimmune diseases.

serum

The liquid part of blood after clotting.

Scientific: Pharmaceutical
Biotechnology / Immunology

Serum is the clear, yellowish fluid that remains after blood clots. It contains antibodies and other proteins important for immune responses.

podocytes

Specialized cells in the kidneys that filter blood.

Scientific: Pharmaceutical
Biotechnology / Nephrology

Podocytes are specialized cells in your kidneys that act like tiny filters. They help remove waste products from your blood and form urine.

renal tubular cells

Cells lining the tubules in the kidneys.

Scientific: Pharmaceutical
Biotechnology / Nephrology

Renal tubular cells are the cells that line the tiny tubes (tubules) in your kidneys. They reabsorb essential substances back into your bloodstream and help form urine.

molecular dynamics simulation

A computer simulation of the movement and interaction of molecules.

Scientific: Pharmaceutical
Biotechnology / Computational Biology

Molecular dynamics simulation is a powerful tool used to study how molecules behave. By running computer simulations, scientists can predict how molecules will interact and move, which can help them design new drugs or understand biological processes.

aggregation

The clumping together of molecules.

Scientific: Pharmaceutical
Biotechnology / Protein Chemistry

Aggregation is the process where molecules stick together to form clumps or larger structures. This can happen with various types of molecules, including proteins.
