TLDR; PROJECT SUMMARY AI BETA
Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are a big problem because they break down common antibiotics. This project studies how AmpC beta-lactamase, an enzyme that causes resistance, works. By understanding this enzyme, scientists hope to develop new drugs that can stop it and make antibiotics effective again.
Note: This TLDR is a simplication and may not be 100% accurate.OFFICAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The rise in antibiotic resistant bacteria is a looming public health issue.
This project simulates AmpC β-lactamases found in many cephalosporin resistant bacteria.
This protein mediates resistance to most antibiotics by breaking down the drug.
Because it reduces the types of antibiotics that can be used to treat various infections, physicians have fewer ways to kill bacteria having this resistance protein.
Therefore, to design new antibiotics against these bacteria, we are interested in understanding how AmpC β-lactamase dynamics affects binding of various therapeutics.
This knowledge will help develop drugs that disrupt this enzyme, which will permit the use of broad spectrum antibiotics on these resistant bacteria again.
RELATED TERMS GLOSSARY AI BETA
Antibiotic
A substance that kills or inhibits the growth of microorganisms.
Antibiotics are medications used to treat bacterial infections. They work by either killing bacteria or stopping them from multiplying. Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern because bacteria can evolve to become resistant to these medications.
Bacteria
Single-celled organisms that can exist independently or as part of a colony.
Bacteria are tiny living organisms found everywhere. Some bacteria are helpful, while others can cause diseases. Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections.
Resistance
The ability of a microorganism to withstand the effects of an antibiotic.
Antibiotic resistance happens when bacteria evolve and become less susceptible to antibiotics. This makes infections harder to treat.
AmpC β-lactamase
A type of enzyme that breaks down β-lactam antibiotics.
AmpC β-lactamase is an enzyme produced by some bacteria. It can make antibiotics like penicillin and cephalosporin less effective by breaking them down.
Cephalosporin
A type of antibiotic that works by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Cephalosporins are a group of antibiotics often used to treat bacterial infections. They work by preventing bacteria from building their cell walls.
Pharmaceutical
Relating to the preparation and sale of medicines.
The pharmaceutical industry focuses on researching, developing, manufacturing, and marketing medications.
