TLDR; PROJECT SUMMARY AI BETA

This project looks at how antibodies get better at fighting the flu. Researchers will compare how well original and improved antibodies stick to a part of the flu virus called hemagglutinin, which helps it infect cells.

Note: This TLDR is a simplication and may not be 100% accurate.

OFFICAL PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project aims to study the effect of antibody affinity maturation towards neutralizing the influenza hemagglutinin.

We want to observe the differences in binding affinities of the germline and matured versions of the antibodies to the stem region of the glycoprotein.

RELATED TERMS GLOSSARY AI BETA

Note: Glossary items are a high level summary and may not be 100% accurate.

affinity maturation

The process by which antibodies become more effective at binding to their target.

Technical: Biotechnology
Immunology / Antibody Engineering

Affinity maturation is a crucial process in the adaptive immune response. It involves the gradual improvement of antibody binding strength through genetic mutations introduced during B cell development. These changes enhance the antibody's ability to recognize and neutralize specific antigens, such as viruses or bacteria.

influenza

A contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses.

Scientific: Pharmaceutical
Virology / Respiratory Infections

Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a viral infection that affects the respiratory system. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and fatigue. Influenza viruses are constantly evolving, leading to seasonal outbreaks. Vaccines are available to protect against common strains of influenza.

hemagglutinin

A glycoprotein found on the surface of influenza viruses that binds to sialic acid receptors on host cells.

Scientific: Biotechnology
Virology / Viral Structure

Hemagglutinin is a key viral protein responsible for attaching influenza viruses to host cells. It binds to sialic acid molecules present on cell surfaces, facilitating viral entry and infection. Hemagglutinin is a target for antiviral drugs and vaccines.

antibody

A protein produced by the immune system that binds to specific antigens.

Technical: Biotechnology
Immunology / Immune Response

Antibodies are essential components of the adaptive immune system. They recognize and bind to foreign substances called antigens, marking them for destruction by other immune cells. Antibodies play a crucial role in protecting the body from infections and diseases.

glycoprotein

A protein that has attached carbohydrate molecules.

Scientific: Pharmaceutical
Biochemistry / Protein Structure

Glycoproteins are proteins with carbohydrates covalently attached to their polypeptide chains. These carbohydrate modifications play essential roles in various biological processes, including cell signaling, immune recognition, and protein folding.
